How Does A Ductless Air Conditioner Work?

Ductless air conditioning utilizes both an indoor and outdoor unit in order to function. The indoor unit is usually installed near the ceiling of the home, allowing for homeowners to maximize the space beneath on both the walls and floors. The outdoor unit is an air compressor that is connected to the indoor unit via pipes in the walls.

In order to provide cooling, warm air is first taken from the indoor air within the room that the ductless unit is installed. The air is then brought to the outdoor unit where it meets a series of coils. Once it meets these coils, the heat energy is transferred over. Once the cycle within the unit has completed, the now cooler air returns back through the pipes to the indoor unit - allowing for the room to be cooled.

What Is The Difference Between Central Air Conditioning And Ductless Air Conditioning?

Although the central air conditioning unit and ductless air conditioning units are quite different in their design and installation. They do operate in similar ways. For example, they both take in hot, humid air in order to convert it to cool air before injecting it back into the indoor space. The process is also quite similar, as both forms of air conditioning remove the heat and moisture from the air in order to cool it down.

The main differences between the central air conditioning unit and the ductless air conditioning unit are their design and deliverables.

  1.  The central air conditioning unit is a whole-home air cooling solution that provides consistent temperature to every room within a home. This system is usually installed with a single thermostat that controls the home’s temperature as a whole.
The ductless air conditioning unit is an independent cooling solution that has the ability to control the temperature within a single room. In this case, there could be several thermostats in the home with different temperature gauges on each.
  2. The central air conditioning unit is installed throughout the entire home using ductwork - essentially the lungs of the home. These ducts are what transfer air to and from the home, allowing for consistent, whole-home temperature control.
The ductless air conditioner is installed within a single room of the home. It does not require ductwork as it only controls the temperature within a given space.
