How Does Central Air Conditioning Work?
Although it has seen many incredible technological advancements in recent years, Central Air Conditioning is considered a traditional form of air conditioning. It’s main function is cooling the entire home from one central location!
Using a network of airways, known as ductwork, throughout the home, warm air is essentially pulled into the airways and released outdoors.
Central air conditioning relies on two specific coils in order to cool the home as well - the condensing coil (found in the exterior unit) and the evaporator coil (found in the interior unit). Both of these coils work together in converting warm air into cool air.
Once the cooling conversion is complete, the central air unit then pushes the air back through the ductwork and out of the vents within your home.
2 Main Types Of Ducted Central Air Conditioning Systems:
- Central Air Split System
The Central Air Split System is made up of two units - an outdoor metal cabinet and an indoor cabinet. The outdoor cabinet holds the condenser and compressor, while the indoor cabinet holds the evaporator.
PRO TIP: Does your home already have a furnace installed? If so, a Central Air Split System is probably the most economical central air conditioner for your home!
- Central Air Packaged Unit
A central Air Packaged Unit only requires one unit, which is located outdoors. This unit holds the condenser, compressor and evaporator.
PRO TIP: If you’re looking for an all-in-one heating and cooling unit - this is probably your best option!
What Are The Benefits Of Central Air Conditioning?
Air conditioning itself is going to offer your home a myriad of benefits - including an overall improvement in comfort, and quality of life!
But if you’re looking for a specific air conditioner that provides whole home comfort, improved energy efficiency, reduced humidity levels, cleaner indoor air quality and requires low maintenance, a central air conditioner is one of the best cooling solutions available!
Plus, a ducted central air conditioner saves up so much space in your home!

What Is The Maintenance Like For A Central Air Conditioner?
One of the main reasons homeowners choose central air conditioning is because of the low maintenance requirements. We do, however, recommend an annual preventative air conditioning maintenance appointment as well as an annual duct cleaning in order to keep your central air conditioner functioning properly!
