What Are The Different Types of Geothermal Heating? How Do They Work?

There are many types of ground loop systems to choose from. But which one fits your property best?

Closed-Loop Systems

In a typical closed-loop geothermal system, heat transfers from the ground to the home using:
  • Ground loops,
  • A heat pump and
  • A heat distribution system.
Step 1:
Thermally insulated heat exchanger compartment for quiet operation and reduced clearance and combustibles.
Step 2:
As liquid circulates underground, it absorbs thermal energy from the earth’s stable temperature.
Step 3:
This thermal energy is then transferred to the ground source heat pump.
Step 4:
Here, the heat pump removes heat from the liquid and distributes it throughout your home in the form of:
  • Forced air heating,
  • Radiant heating or
  • Hot water heating.
This type of closed-loop heating works with both vertical and horizontal ground loops.

Open Loop Systems

Another type of geothermal heating, called open-loop, uses groundwater as a heat source. Instead of using a liquid to transfer heat to the pump, this system uses water directly from the source.
Pond/Lake System
A pond/lake system is another type of open-loop system. But instead of using groundwater as the source, it uses a pond or lake.

How To Choose The Right Geothermal Heating System For Your Home

When selecting a geothermal heating system for your home, you’ll need to consider a series of factors, including:
  • Soil conditions
  • Available land
  • Local installation costs
  • Available water sources
  • Climate etc.
Once we have information about your unique home, region and budget, we can help you choose between the different ground loop solutions.

Is Geothermal Heating Worth It?

Are you looking for a more energy-efficient home heating solution? This is it!
Geothermal heating can deliver between 3 and 4 units of energy for every single unit of electrical energy used to power the system.
That means a geothermal heating system can operate at 400% efficiency!
And it doesn’t stop there!

Added Benefits Of Choosing Geothermal

  • Energy Efficient
  • Quiet Operation
  • Low Maintenance
  • Longer Lifespan
  • Increased Home Value
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Safe
  • Reliable
  • Low Operating Costs
A geothermal heating system can even double as a geothermal cooling system – providing heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer!
