The Year Home Air Conditioning Became A Necessity

Campeau Heating in Sudbury, Ontario, provides necessary Air Conditioning tips to stay cool this summer.

The Year Home Air Conditioning Became A Necessity

Have air conditioners always been considered a staple home appliance? Not until just recently! Up until last year, the majority of homeowners actually considered air conditioners more of an option, or even a luxury! Never before was it considered an imperative need...that is, until now.

As we are all very well aware, the global pandemic hit in the year 2020, over a year ago today. Since then, our way of life has drastically changed. Did you know that Canadians, on average, spend over 90% of their time indoors? With the continuous lockdowns, quarantine measures and stay-at-home orders, this has only increased!

On top of this, Canada also experienced record breaking heat waves in 2020 - not good timing!

With all of this to say, it’s not surprising that Canadians are rushing to install that central air conditioning! What used to be a luxury ideal is now something we must consider, especially with the possibility of more heat waves and stay-at-home orders on the horizon.

At Campeau Heating, we can repair, replace or install your air conditioner in Sudbury, Ontario, and surrounding areas! We work with homeowners, cottage owners and business owners in providing comfort and safety in their spaces.

If you’re worried about upcoming heat waves this summer, now is the time to look into your air conditioning options! Whether you are looking for a central air conditioner, ductless air conditioner, split air conditioner, high velocity air conditioning etc., we have the cooling solution you need to prepare for the summer heat ahead!

Make the Healthy Summer Choice With a New Air Conditioner Installation

Did you know that extreme heat waves can cause serious health risks? Although it might be tempting for your kids to run outside and play in the sprinklers during a heat wave, that might not be the safest option for them.

What Are The Negative Health Effects Of Extreme Heat?

  • Heat Stroke
  • Heat Exhaustion
  • Fainting
  • Muscle Cramping
  • Heat Rash
  • Heat Edema

Many Canadians are affected by what is commonly known as “heat stroke” during our hot and humid summers. In certain areas of the country where extreme heat events are more common, it’s so important that we take the necessary precautions in protecting ourselves and our families against these dangerous health effects.

How Can Air Conditioning Help Protect You During A Heat Wave?

Your body regulates its own temperature fairly well in different weather conditions. Whether it is adjusting to hot air, hot surfaces, wind, sun rays etc., your body is focused on maintaining a healthy, regulated bodily temperature.

High humidity slows down your body’s temperature regulating process - causing a harmful increase in temperature. This is what causes the negative health effects that we’ve listed above.

In order to help protect yourself and your family from both short and long term health conditions, it is important that you:

  1. Prepare for upcoming heat waves in advance
  2. Do your best to stay cool during heat waves
  3. Avoid exposure, especially over-exposure, to extreme outdoor heat

Did you know that an air conditioning system can actually contribute to all three of these precautions? Air conditioners play a key role in helping regulate your indoor environment, which helps your body to better regulate its own temperature as well.

Besides regulating temperature control, air conditioning also helps with humidity control, ventilation and indoor air quality. This is why it is so important to have a well maintained and reliable air conditioner installed in your home. Especially now that Canada’s summer heat waves are expected to rise even more over the next 30 years!

5 Air Conditioning Tips For Keeping Your Home Cool This Summer

It’s important to note that, during a heat wave, your air conditioning system is working OVERTIME! So don’t be too surprised if it takes a while to even catch up to the heat wave, let alone overcome it. As long as it’s functioning properly though, it will drastically improve your indoor cooling!

Is Your Air Conditioning System Not Working? Here’s How To Troubleshoot!

  • Check for a dirty air filter.
  • Check for a refrigerant leak.
  • Check for leaky ducts.
  • Is your air conditioner overused or improperly installed (ie. an undersized air conditioner that isn’t built to cool larger areas)?
  • Check for a blocked condensing unit.

If you’re not sure how to check your air conditioner for these problems, call our AC repair team at Campeau Heating! Our experienced cooling technicians have the knowledge and tools to keep your air conditioning unit back up and running in no time!

If your air conditioner is working properly, however it’s not able to overcome the heat wave, we have a few tips that can help!

1. Turn your fan switch to “on” rather than “auto”.

You’d be surprised how much of a difference this can make to your home’s air conditioning! By keeping the fan on at all times, you can help keep your indoor air circulating on a regular basis - which allows for better temperature control throughout each room in your home.

2. Keep your curtains, blinds and shades closed during the day.

How many times has your mom or grandma told you about this handy trick? Keeping your windows closed can play a huge role in keeping those hot UV rays out of your home while also helping to keep your cool air inside.

3. Close doors and air vents to rooms that are not in use.

If you only use certain rooms in your home, try closing the air vents and doors to those rooms in order to focus your AC cooling within rooms you actually use. This can help reduce the ambient temperature of your house by a few degrees!

4. Don’t use your oven, dishwasher or dryer on extremely hot days.

Home appliances, such as your oven, dishwasher or dryer, bring heat into your home when in use. That’s why, during the summer months, most homeowners opt for outdoor BBQ and/or patio dinners. This helps limit the heat being introduced into your home environment, while also conserving the cool air that your air conditioning system is working so hard to maintain.

5. Maintain, Repair or Upgrade Your Air Conditioning System

Your air conditioning system works extremely hard during the summer months to keep you and your family cool and comfortable. However, after an extremely hot summer, or a series of hot summers, your air conditioner may begin to lose power. This causes it to deteriorate in efficiency and functionality - something you do not want to experience this summer!

Our cooling experts at Campeau Heating recommend that you schedule regular AC maintenance for your air conditioning unit. This will ensure that all AC repairs are properly taken care of and that your home stays comfortable all summer long - even in an intense heat wave!
